WASDA supports the induction of first year superintendents through New Superintendents Academy experiences including in-person workshops, virtual academy sessions, networking sessions, and executive coaching.
Academy Topics
The Academy in-person workshops and virtual sessions provide just-in-time, rigorous content focused on effectively fulfilling superintendent roles and responsibilities. 2024-2025 Academy topics include: - Effective governance practices,
- Developing productive board/superintendent relationships,
- Promoting student achievement and evidence-based practices to close achievement gaps,
- Addressing school legal issues,
- Wise business and fiscal stewardship,
- Effective communications,
- Community engagement,
- Leading and operating schools during challenging times,
- Navigating the political context associated with decisions.
Special attention will be given to supporting superintendent decisions associated with leading and operating schools during these challenging times including building relationships with the school community, navigating the present political landscape, and promoting consensus around common vision for schools. Academy sessions emphasize practical real-world examples, high leverage strategies to achieve results, and hints to avoid common missteps.
Academy Calendar 20+ Virtual and 4 In-Person Academy Sessions will be
held during 2024-2025. The first two
academy sessions (July 31-August 1) will be in-person workshops. The September
and April in-person sessions are scheduled to accompany WASDA's Fall Conference
and Spring Annual Educational Conference. A session is also
scheduled during the State Education Convention in January.
The
Virtual
Sessions will be held August 2024 through May 2025. Virtual
sessions will be held two or three times per month via Zoom™ with the session
generally being 1 ½ hours long. Virtual
sessions are recorded and placed on the WASDA New Superintendents resource page
for reference. Coaching
WASDA ‘pairs’ each First Year Superintendents Academy participant with a highly regarded, experienced superintendent coach to formally assist the new superintendents to refine skills, overcome obstacles, accelerate growth, and enhance performance. Induction is also supported by a mentor colleague assigned from within the new superintendent’s CESA region.
