UW-Madison Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis

Academy Goals and Purpose

Recent federal and state initiatives have leveraged big data to label students, teachers, principals, schools, and districts as effective or ineffective.  We believe that superintendents, armed with better access to data systems and analytics, can reclaim their stake in framing public policy debates and educational goals, informing educational processes, and interpreting educational results.

Members of the Academy will work together to frame critical questions and leverage data systems to investigate relationships between student learning and factors such as regional and localized poverty, student mobility, staffing, leadership practices, curriculum and instructional design, pay systems, community supports, and other elements of the complex systems that shape student outcomes.

Data Tools

Academy participants will use Forecast5, WISEdash, and the Comprehensive Assessment of Leadership for Learning (CALL), along with existing district level data and other state and national databases to inform policy and strengthen systems and processes that enhance student learning.

Program Description

Big Data provides new opportunities for understanding and guiding large complex systems. The Data Analytics Leadership Academy provides tools and access to data systems needed to answer critical questions about system processes that promote and impede student learning. Designed in a blended learning environment, the Academy invites superintendents and up to two members of their district leadership team to work together to build capacity to use data analytics to inform systems-level decision-making and improve student learning outcomes.

The course will be taught by a team of instructor/facilitators from WASDA and UW-Madison, to include:

  • WASDA President Kris Gilmore
  • WASDA Member & UW-Madison Adjunct Professor Jim Shaw
  • UW-Madison Assistant Professor Peter Goff
  • UW-Madison Professor Carolyn Kelley

Meeting Dates

Participants will also be invited to lead a discussion of data analytics at the 2015 Fall State Superintendent’s Conference in Madison.
