WASDA is committed to supporting the success of each first year superintendent with induction experiences through the First Year Superintendents Academy. Opportunities include in-person workshops, virtual webinars, coaching, and ‘just-in-time’ e-mail blasts.

Academy Sessions

Academy content for 2023-24 will give particular attention to supporting superintendent decisions associated with leading and operating schools during these challenging times including building relationships with the school community, navigating the political context associated with decisions, and addressing widening student achievement gaps. The Academy syllabus specifically emphasizes developing successful board/superintendent relationships, promoting student achievement and closing achievement gaps, implementing evidence-based practices, developing and leading staff, wise business and fiscal stewardship, addressing school legal issues, effective communications, and community engagement.

Academy presenters will engage leaders with relevant, just-in-time content for application fulfilling district responsibilities. Session objectives are designed specifically to assist new superintendents to apply high-leverage strategies to achieve results and avoid common errors that can create significant problems.

The 2023-24 First Year Superintendents Academy will combine in-person and virtual learning opportunities. The first two academy sessions (August 2 and 3) will be in-person workshops. The September and April in-person sessions are scheduled to accompany WASDA’s Fall Superintendents Conference and Annual Educational Conference. Virtual sessions will be held two or three times per month via Zoom with the session being 1 ½ hours long.

Coaching

Each first-year superintendent will be paired with a highly regarded, experienced superintendent for coaching.  The coaching experience reaches beyond the simplistic textbook answers for issues to consider the nuances and subtleties of leadership which high performing leaders have mastered.

WASDA is pleased to announce several opportunities to support your leadership as you enter year two of your superintendency.  In response to your feedback, you may access coaching, new academy sessions, networking opportunities, and specialized WASDA conference sessions designed for early career superintendents. We hope the Early Career Superintendents Academy and coaching opportunities will support continued growth in your role, refinement of your leadership skills, and provide you with the chance to dig more deeply into areas of interest.

Academy Sessions

WASDA is pleased to offer new academy sessions on dates throughout the coming year for early career superintendents. Most of the sessions are virtual, a few are in-person. Please note the new sessions devoted entirely to referendum planning and another to literacy. Multiple new presentations target superintendent requests including finance and legal topics, and new practitioner focused topics. The complete list of early career academy sessions available to you in the coming year is provided below. The descriptions are available on the WASDA website. We hope you will agree that the outline provides high-quality, must-have content!

Participation in the academy portion of Early Career programming also provides you access to all the first-year academy sessions as well as the recordings for review or to view any you may have missed due to schedule conflicts this past year. The cost to participate in the Early Career Academy sessions is - $500.

Executive Coaching

Executive coaching provides a risk-free opportunity for continuous growth and improvement and accelerated learning. In challenging times, leaders must make strategic decisions with far-reaching impact that may change the trajectory of their organization. Objective coaches, who have no self-interest in the outcome of a decision, help new leaders to analyze, find opportunity in the face of challenges, and integrate skills into daily interactions. Research indicates coaching results in 'better, more sustained and accelerated learning, development of critical thinking skills, improvement in team leadership performance, and increases in leader's self-awareness.' (Coaching for Leaders: Why Executives Need Support,' Center for Creative Leadership.)

Superintendents may participate in coaching regardless of whether coaching was accessed during the 2022-2023 year. Leaders who wish to continue with their coach from 2022-23 can request that opportunity.  The cost to participate in Coaching is $500.

Access to Academy and Coaching

The cost to participate in the academy sessions and coaching for 2023-24 is $900 (a $100 discount).

We hope you will take advantage of the many WASDA opportunities available during the coming year including the valuable Early Career activities detailed above.

Leading Successful Organizations

The 2024 WASDA Annual Educational Conference will be held in Green Bay on April 24-26, 2024, and the focus of the conference program is intended to support your ability to experience success in leading your organization. One of the many quotes attributed to Green Bay Packer Coach Vince Lombardi transcends sports and has implications for district leadership. “The only place success comes before work is in the dictionary.” As superintendents, you are accustomed to putting in the work that leads to success for your students, your districts, and your communities.

The conference program will highlight the work that contributes to success of schools, districts, and leaders. WASDA Business Partners and school district leaders have teamed up to share their collaborative endeavors. School attorneys will provide the most up-to-date information on a myriad of legal topics that are and will be impacting districts. And your colleagues will be sharing their experiences and lessons learned on impactful strategies, practices, and processes that are central to effective and successful district leadership.

WASDA members value opportunities to network. Beyond conference sessions, the WASDA Annual Educational Conference will provide an opportunity to recognize the service of our superintendents and celebrate the accomplishments and success of WASDA members who will be retiring this year. And what would a trip to Green Bay be without a chance to connect with colleagues and WASDA Business Partners at Legendary Lambeau Field!

Make plans now to attend the 2024 WASDA Annual Educational Conference!

Leading in Wellness – A Professional Resilience Affinity Group https://www.wasda.org/events/eventdetails.aspx?id=1769889 https://www.wasda.org/events/eventdetails.aspx?id=1769889 What We Know
Personal and professional resilience are not absolutes or skills to master.  Rather they are moment to moment complements of internal capacities, external supports, and practical tools.  Maintaining our capacity to be resilient relies on ongoing intention, investment, practice, persistence, support, and encouragement.  Our ability to be well in our roles as school leaders requires that we access spaces, relationships, and ideas that help us grow in our own practice, so that we may offer support to our school communities, fostering cultures of wellness.

    What to Expect

    • A strength-based, supportive, and restorative environment
    • Connection to your peers across Wisconsin
    • Opportunities to learn and share with one another
    • Privacy and discretion
    • Practical ideas, tools, and strategies focused on your needs and priorities
    • A welcoming, flexible atmosphere that allows you to come as you are and to take what you need

    Academy Facilitator

Amy Scheel-Jones brings passion, expertise, and a practical approach to fostering professional resilience.  A systems-thinker and committed advocate for educators, students, and families, Amy’s approach builds on existing strengths and extends knowledge and skills that help us rise to the challenges we face in education today.  Her experience as a school counselor, leader in county services, trained crisis responder, and director of trauma-responsive practices are offered to support you moving from knowing to doing. Now more than ever we recognize that it can no longer only be Self-Care, we must foster Communities of Care that allow us, our staff, and our students the opportunity to thrive.
